Anniversary of the city / Valentine´s day
Matagalpa brims with enthusiasm and joy in valentine´s day, February 14th, Matagalpa celebrates the day it was appointed as city, given in 14th February in 1862.
In this tremendous display of talent and beauty there are many different activities such as: A conference about the histoy of Matagalpa, election and coronation of the Queen of Matagalpa, poetry recitals, campesino musical festival, sport events, Artistic juvenile festival of dance, love festival, Fair Nicamer with gastronomy, handicraft, culture and popular parties with national and international bands, Diana through Matagalpa city, float contest, finishing with a big party on the 14th of February that takes place from park to park with many national artists.
La Feria del Maíz
In August the corn harvest is celebrated, which is the base product of our diet. They are 3 unforgettable days of parties where you can taste the most delicious dishes elaborated with this product. Besides that you can enjoy cultural events, the election of the queen of the fair and popular parties.
Feria Agropecuaria
It is celebrated the third week of septemeber, with cattle exhibitions, cultural shows, and parties with the best national and international musical bands.
Polkas, Mazurcas and Jamaquellos Festival
This campesino festival is one of the festivals that the municipality and INTUR to rescue and keep alive the regional music of polkas, mazurcas y jamaquellos.
It is a gastronomic, artistic, cultural and artisan festival celebrated the last weekend of September where the best musical groups of dance and music norteña participate (Matagalpa, Jinotega and Nueva Segovia), which gives an identity regional touch to the festivity.
Besides music and dance you can enjoy typical food and drinks, local dances, election of the queen, float parade, typical fantasy suits parade and musical bands performances with rhythms livening up popular parties.
In general, this party takes place in the park Dario of our city, The north pearl and capital of production.
Coffee Fair
Our coffee is our national pride and there are enough reasons to celebrate, almost 2 centuries of tradition. Therefore, in november and december Matagalpa is overjoyed of happiness celebrating many activities, such as: Conferences, Coffee tasting, election and and coronation of the queen, popular party, contests.
The coffee fair has been created with the intention to promote the history and development of the coffee activity, rescue the cultural patrimony of Matagalpa and contribute to the development of alternative tourism in Matagalpa.
This festival is sponsored and organizad by the tourism Institute (INTUR) and it is celebrated to honor Virgen Mercedes, the saint of this city.
La Gritería en Matagalpa
The story of the origen of this celebration goes back to the cities of Granada and Leon. It is said that in 1639 franciscan priests used to celebrate that celebration the 8th of december to honor Virgen Mary in the convent founded that same year in Leon.
La Purísima Concepción de María was the subject of a speach pronounced in the church of Granada by the Guatemalan frair José Velazco on december 7th in 1675, who invited to the town to pray la novena and celebrate it with joy
Nowadays it is celebrated all over the country singing and praying to the Virgen. In the houses people continue decorating altars with flowers and lights. The group of people come to the houses where there are altars and they say prayers to La Purisima, they introduce themselves singing the chorous ¿Who causes so much happiness? And the owner of the house responds !The Conception of Mary! And they give them “El Paquete” or “La Gorra” in it , it use to give, chicha (made with corn), sweets of milk, sweet of coconut among other typical nicaraguan sweets, sugar-cane, oranges, sweet lemons, ayote in Money, bananas etc.. or like in Leon, products of domestic use, such as salt, sugar, matches, toothbrushes, etc.
