Money matters

The national currency is the cordoba, but people call it peso as well.

Most of the shopping malls, shops, grocery stores and restaurants accept dollars.

Not all places accept credit cards.

In most hotels the prices are in dollars

You can find ATMs very close to the banks in every city

Here is a list of the cities that have ATM:

* Matagalpa – MC, V
* Chinandega – MC, V
* Estelí – MC, V
* Granada – MC, V
* Jinotega – MC
* Juigalpa – V
* León – MC, V
* Managua – MC, V
* Masaya – MC, V
* Rivas – MC, V
* San Juan del Sur – MC

V = Visa
MC = MasterCard

To change your money you can visit the banks in every city, but also there are some people outside the banks who change money ( only dollars). These people are known as coyotes. When you go to change money with them make sure that the change is correct before you hand over the money (dollars). Do not take  too much money out on the street at once, it may call thives´ attention.

It is easy to find an ATM in Matagalpa because there is a street where all the banks of the department are located. There is only one bank in the city that will make international transactions and cash travellers checks. This bank is the Banco de America Central (BAC). This is located half a block south of the traffic light at the Parque Morazan.
